Two per car now allowed under MCO

WITH phase four of the Movement Control Order (MCO) starting today, Malaysians see a slight easing of the regulations that have been in place since March 18, when the MCO was first announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as a measure against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now, Malaysians are allowed to be “accompanied by one family member staying in the same house” when heading out for necessities, though the movement restriction of a 10km radius stays firmly in place. However, should those necessities be unavailable within the 10km radius, Malaysians are now allowed to travel beyond that distance to make these purchases.

This was published in the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease (Measures Within Infected Local Areas) (No. 4) Regulations 2020 under a gazette dated April 28, and was signed off by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba.

Previously, the regulations had been that a person “shall not be accompanied by any other person unless it is reasonably necessary for him to be accompanied by any other person.”

Another addition is an expansion to what is deemed a necessity, with “any other goods from any provider of essential services” added to the list.

This takes effect until May 12 when phase four of the MCO ends.

This, along with the announcement from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry allowing businesses that have received approval to operate at 100%, signals an easing in the restrictions put into place under the MCO. — April 29, 2020
