UMNO assembly to exclude allies over Najib pardon motions

AT the upcoming UMNO General Assembly from Jan 14 to Jan 17, 2026, the allies in the Madani government will be absent as former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s pardon calls will dominate the debates.

The most prominent issue among the 662 submitted motions is calls for full justice and a royal pardon, with 104 divisions pushing for appeals to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s mercy.

There are also no motions urging UMNO to leave the unity government, though delegates may raise the topic during discussions.

Other notable motions include expanding Technical and Vocational Education and Training programmes for youth.

“One of the hottest and most submitted motions by divisions (are those) demanding justice and a full pardon for (Najib),” UMNO’s secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajd told a press conference at the UMNO headquarters in Menara Dato Onn today.

“As for the motions officially submitted to Umno’s headquarters, not a single one calls for UMNO to withdraw from the unity government, of which UMNO is a key party,” he said.

While no coalition partners from the Madani government were invited, Barisan Nasional allies like MCA and MIC are expected to attend.

On the other hand, UMNO leaders reaffirmed commitment to the coalition until the next general election, dismissing early talks of electoral pacts or returning to past alliances. — Jan 10, 2026
