Umno assembly votes in favour of no-contest motion

THE motion to exclude the president and deputy president from the upcoming party elections was approved by the UMNO general assembly.

At roughly 4.55pm today, the motion was approved.

This indicates that UMNO’s president and deputy president, respectively, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, will serve out another term in those positions.

It was said that UMNO was divided over holding a fight for the top two positions; some believed it would endanger the party’s division, while others believed it would provide the party’s president and vice president a chance to demonstrate their support among party members.

Zahid has previously stated that he would defer to the delegates’ judgement over whether the two positions should be put up for election.

A voice vote was used to approve the motion. Delegates who were against the proposal were then invited to stand.

When the proposal was put to a vote earlier today, former Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin predicted that it would likely be “bulldozed” through. — Jan 14, 2023
