UMNO leader sees PRK as opportunity for Nenggiri’s development gains

KELANTAN UMNO information head Datuk Zawawi Othman views the Nenggiri by-election (PRK) as the best opportunity for the people in the state legislative assembly (DUN) to obtain development benefits for the area.

“This is a golden opportunity that the people of Nenggiri are looking for. Just like the people of DUN Galas with allocations from the central government, it will be abundant if Barisan Nasional (BN) wins, but if they lose it is the same as today.

“We can talk to the voters on the fence but if PAS loses and BN wins then there will be more injections into the region,” he said.

The Nenggiri PRK scheduled for Aug 17 will feature a contest between BN and PN following the closure of nominations this morning.

BN has selected Gua Musang UMNO Youth chief Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani as its candidate representing the unity government. PN has put forward Rizwadi Ismail of Bersatu, who recently joined PAS.

Returning officer Nik Raisnan Daud confirmed the candidates’ names at the Dewan Perdana in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

This PRK was called after Kelantan state assembly speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah announced the vacancy on June 19, following Bersatu’s notification that former assemblyman Azizi Abu Naim had left the PN party on June 13.

As of June 18, there are 20,259 eligible voters, including 20,245 ordinary voters and 14 police officers.

BN lost the Nenggiri seat in 2023 to PN last year, when Azizi won with an 810-vote majority over UMNO’s Ab Aziz Yussof. – Aug 3, 2024
