“UMNO would be ‘purified’ if PAS joins unity govt,” says party sec-gen

UMNO would be “cleansed” should recent speculations of PAS joining the unity government proves to be true, said Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

The UMNO secretary-general was commenting on PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man’s statement that the Islamist party will once again be part of the federal government “soon”.

Tuan Ibrahim said this at a press conference after officiating the 64th PAS Youth Summit in Shah Alam on Oct 18, where he further claimed that the foreign leaders he had met had told him that the country’s future depended on PAS and Perikatan Nasional (PN).

According to Asyraf, should this become a reality, there will be no more “fatwas” or speeches from PAS leaders and supporters criticising any party especially those whose ideologies differ from theirs.

“There will be no more issues about Islam being threatened or Malays being threatened as often reported in the news,” he said in a Facebook post.

“There will be no more uses of derogatory terms, as well as labels such as ‘sesat’ (deviant), ‘kafir’ (infidel) and ‘munafik’ (religious hypocrite) when they become ‘friends’ again as how they were during the 22 months when both parties were part of Muafakat Nasional and ‘penyatuan ummah’ (Muslim unity).

“There will also be no more parties in the government coalition with Malay Muslim members such as UMNO, Amanah and PKR that would be called a ‘DAP lackey’ or a ‘DAP bootlicker’.”

According to Asyraf, PAS’ inclusion in the unity government has the potential to lower the escalating political temperature in the country, and allow the Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim-led unity government to focus on restoring the country’s economy and improving the people’s quality of lives.

“This would mean that there will be no more politics of slander that are detrimental and harmful [to the people],” he added. – Oct 20, 2023
