Unabating net selling of Malaysian equities by foreign investors

FOREIGN investors remained net sellers on Bursa Malaysia for the third consecutive week with an outflow amounting to -RM323.98 mil for the week ended July 9.

As the market reopened last Monday (July 5), foreign investors sold -RM25.70 mil net of local equities with retailers as net buyers and local institutions as net sellers to the tune of RM29.94 mil and -RM4.24 mil respectively.

“Foreign investors were net seller every day last week except on Friday (July 9) with an inflow of +RM28.52 mil,” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report.

“The largest foreign outflow was recorded on Thursday (July 8) while the smallest outflow was on Tuesday (July 6) to the tune of RM199.46 mil and -RM23.02 mil respectively.

Retailers were net buyers every day of the week except on Friday (July 9). Their largest net buying was recorded on Thursday (July 8) at +RM133.29 mi while their smallest net buying was on Monday (July 5) to the tune of RM29.94 mil.

Cumulatively, retailers net bought +RM311.87 mil worth of equities on Bursa Malaysia during the week.

Meanwhile, local institutions recorded a cumulative weekly inflow of +RM12.10 mil despite being net sellers on majority of days last week, notably Monday (July 5), Tuesday (July 6) and Friday (July 9).

Conversely, the largest net buying was on Thursday (July 8) to the tune of +RM66.17 mil.

Since the beginning of 2021, retailers have cumulatively been the only net buyers of the Malaysian equity market to the tune of +RM8.52 bil. Local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers to the tune of -RM3.88 bil and -RM4.64 bi1 respectively.

In terms of market participation, retail investors, local institutions and foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of 21.64%, 18.76% and 0.34% respectively in terms of average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, all markets posted outflow with Thailand incurring US$178.82 mil followed by Malaysia (US$77.68 mil), the Philippines (US$45.92 mil) and Indonesia (US$37.16 mil).

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Tenaga Nasional Bhd (RM3.17 mil), Hartalega Holdings Bhd (RM1.99 mil) and IHH Healthcare Bhd (RM1.72 mil). – July 12, 2021
