THE recent deluge of flight delays has sparked a worrisome trend and this had prompted various quarters to call for an immediate investigation into the matter.
Businessman Yusuf Taiyoob, who today expressed frustration over his delayed Firefly flight from Subang to Penang, which was re-scheduled four times and ultimately departed over four hours late, illustrates this point.
Such delays are unacceptable as they disrupt passengers’ schedules and reveal a pattern of inefficiency and disregard for travellers’ time and as such, the Transport Ministry should step in to tackle this issue, said MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.
“An immediate investigation into Firefly’s and other airlines’ operational practices and flight schedules is necessary,” he remarked.
“A thorough review of timetables, delay management procedures, and customer service protocols is crucial.
“Airlines must be held accountable for failing to adhere to published schedules, and stricter penalties and regulatory measures should be implemented to ensure compliance and prevent further inefficiencies.”
According to Mah, enhanced oversight by the ministry is essential, and regular audits and performance evaluation should be conducted to ensure airlines meet punctuality and service standards.
“Additionally, airlines must provide timely and transparent updates about delays and cancellations to minimise passenger inconvenience,” he suggested.
“Clear policies for compensating passengers affected by significant delays are also needed to mitigate the impact on travellers.”
He said it is evident that this issue extends beyond a single flight and reflects systemic problems in airline operations.
“Such recurring delays not only disrupt the travel plans of individuals but also adversely impact the broader business community, which relies on timely and reliable air travel,” Mah stated.
“We urge the Transport Ministry to take decisive action to improve the quality and reliability of domestic air travel in Malaysia.” – Aug 16, 2024
