Uthaya Sankar’s arrest: Don’t speculate on the case, police tell the public

THE police advised the public not to engage in speculation in regards to the arrest of author Uthaya Sankar SB for allegedly insulting Islam.

“We also like to remind the public not to make statements that will hurt racial or religious sentiments.

“Please use social media platforms responsibility and don’t do things that will create anxiety among the public. We will take stern action against those who flout the law and never compromise on the matter,” said Bukit Aman criminal investigation department (CID) chief Datuk Seri Abd Jalil Hassan, in a statement.

Yesterday, Uthaya Sankar was detained at his home in Sri Muda Shah Alam for allegedly posting a comment deemed insulting Prophet Muhammad on April 7.

He was said to have published the post following artiste Iman Zulkarnain’s comments on the media, stating he had regretted pracitising polygamy as he could not be fair to his wives.

On that note, Jalil said that Uthaya Sankar is currently being investigated by Unit Siasatan Jenayah Terkelas (USJT) under Section 298A of the Penal Code for creating public mischief and Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communications Act for improper use of network services.

The police have also confiscated his phone and sim card, which was claimed to have been used to upload the post.

“Uthaya Sankar will be taken for a remand hearing today,” he mentioned. – April 12, 2022
