UTS Sibu raises the bars on hospitality with viral video on hostel condition

WHEN the word hostel is being mentioned, memories of cramp, filthy places being shared by too many people come to mind. But is this always the case for us?

Apparently not if you are one of the lucky students who studied at University Technology Sarawak (UTS) Sibu.

In a video posted by netizen Datuk Jahat Hensem, a student could be seen providing a short but sweet tour of his room which came with all the creature comforts to make any student proud.

Instead of a ratty twin bunk bed, the student had the bed to himself. Air conditioning was also provided.

According to Datuk Jahat Hensem, UTS belongs entirely to the Sarawak government through Yayasan Sarawak.

Anyone who lives in a hostel already knows this is a far cry compared to what many of us have experienced in the past, living a good distance away from home.

The video has since garnered ample praise from netizens towards the Sarawak government.

“It is really good of the Sarawak government. Funds that enter for the people are given straight to the people. It is not being taken,” said netizen SB.

Here’s another from Monet.

Another netizen also chipped in to provide further info on the hostel.

Alan Razali said even the floor was layered in wood. People won’t get cold sleeping on the floor during study week with their friends.

IPAN added that the people from peninsular Malaysia are going to be jealous seeing the high standards.

Mustaqim Mokhtar said, “There’s air conditioning? Damn.”

While the accommodations provided by UTS are amazing, there was no mention of the rental per month as well as the availability of the units to students.

Such vital information should be useful to provide a balanced picture on the comforts propagated in this video.

Regardless, it is also a wake up call to all the universities out there to provide better living standards to the students. Happy students equals happy learning. What more can we say? – Nov 3, 2024
