“Viral statement is fake,” says UMNO

A PURPORTED statement attributed to UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, suggesting a shift in the party’s focus away from Malay interests has stirred controversy.

UMNO swiftly denied the statement, cautioning against its dissemination.

The statement, which used UMNO’s official letterhead and is dated today, was allegedly issued by Zahid.

“Be careful, everyone. A false statement is going viral. UMNO headquarters denies that the president has issued this statement,” wrote UMNO on a Facebook page.

The fake message comes after the party’s celebration of its 78th anniversary at its headquarters at Menara Datuk Onn, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur yesterday (May 11).

In his speech, Zahid pointed out that UMNO leaders must create positive narratives to win over the public and must also master the use of social media to counter slander hurled at the party.

The Bagan Datuk MP’s emphasis on positive narratives and adept use of social media reflects the party’s recognition of the evolving political landscape.

His speech underscores UMNO’s efforts to maintain relevance amidst changing dynamics and challenges in Malaysian politics.

This incident of viral fake news highlights the significance of political messaging and the role of social media in shaping public perception. – May 12, 2024
