Viral video of nasi lemak seller touting value-added nasi lemak backfires

NASI lemak, the iconic Malaysian dish has always been a delicious meal affordable to all although there are variations in high-end places that come with wallet-tearing price tags.

So those looking to make videos showcasing their value-added nasi lemak options will do well to do some research before presenting it to the masses.

Here in a video by SenahDebab that had gone viral, a lively restaurant owner could be seen explaining the amount of ingredients one could receive from his RM10 Nasi Lemak Bujang, aka nasi lemak for singles.

No elaboration has been made regarding the name of this dish or why he has designed it for people who have yet to enter a romantic relationship.

Regardless, his antics of describing the steady addition of measly ingredients into becoming a RM10 nasi lemak ignited a firestorm in cyberspace.

“During the middle of the month where money is lacking, we have provided nasi lemak for singles for you all. You get one nasi lemak, ground nuts, anchovies, cucumber, half an egg and one fried egg. Singles love to eat eggs during the middle of the month,” he said.

SenahDebab who posted the video went on to compare him to a Zionist businessman, saying RM10 for a slice of squid, a slice of bulls-eyes and a slice of lung  was atrocious.

He was so offended that he went so far as to hope that the man and his business would go into bankruptcy.

The mood of the majority online could best be summed up by netizen Maira who said, “I wanted to curse, but many people are already helping.”

Another netizen fretted over the fact that if singles are already served such a price tag, what about those in a relationship. Then again, what about those having families?

A business-savvy netizen suggested that if anyone felt that the price tag was exorbitant, likely they are not his target customers.

K.H Yon was flexing the lower living standards in Melaka which was probably his state of residence, displaying a styrofoam pack filled to the brim with nasi lemak at a mere RM6. His comment triggered other netizens to also flaunt their version of a cheap nasi lemak.

Shay felt that it was rather inappropriate for the man to state that sambal was given since nasi lemak without sambal would not be called nasi lemak anyway.

Although we have no intention to intervene in other people’s business model, we do believe that the RM10 nasi lemak for singles is rather expensive regardless of all the “additions” he mentioned.

A simple nasi lemak from a hawker by the roadside could fetch about RM2 to RM3, which thankfully comes with sambal and half an egg.

Further up to RM6 to RM7, and one could have alongside the meal a cup of water and a fried chicken. Enough said, the RM10 nasi lemak for singles should be able to feed a couple. At the end of the day, this could very well be a sad joke indeed. – Aug 20, 2024
