Viral video of parent assaulting teacher underlines lack of respect for educators

A CLIP purportedly showing an angry parent confronting and assaulting a teacher has gone viral. The video shared by @Malaysiamostviralll on X (formerly Twitter) has generated over 730,000 views at time of writing.

In the incident, it is alleged that the parent was upset that his son was being punished for smoking in school and also for using a handphone which is banned. The video clearly shows the parent angrily challenging the teacher and then using force.

Although there are always two sides to every story, the video is a sad reflection of a society where there is a lack of respect for educators. Parents will seemingly always back up their ‘little emperors’ no matter how badly they have behaved.

It has since been reported that the father has been arrested for criminal intimidation. The student is sitting for his SPM and will be allowed to continue with the examinations despite being expelled from the school.

Sabah Education director Datuk Raisin Saidin said the department had received reports regarding the incident which took place in a Kota Kinabalu school.

“It is true that the pupil had smoked in the school toilet and such action is not allowed in the school compound,” revealed Raisin. “However, the pupil is still allowed to sit for SPM. He will not be stopped even though he has been expelled from the school.”

The video has provoked a flurry of comments on social media, many lamenting the breakdown in discipline among students. Here is but a small sample.

Needless to say, many believed in the saying ‘spare the rod, spoil the child’.

Quite a few pointed out that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

There is a moral to the story here.

Already, it has been constantly highlighted on social media how many pupils of today feel that formal education is a waste of time. The lack of respect for authority figures among youngsters is also on the wane.

It is hoped that the authorities throw the book at this samseng (rogue) parent to make an example of him. Schools should be safe, conducive havens for learning and positive social development, not breeding grounds for rule-flouting thugs who are encouraged to behave in such a manner by equally thuggish parents. – Feb 1, 2024
