VM2026 is for both inbound and domestic tourism

SINCE Budget 2026 was tabled on Oct 10, there were many reports that Malaysia hopes to attract 47 million visitors and generate RM329 bil in tourism revenue during Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).

But VM2026 is for both inbound and domestic tourism, which include Malaysians and foreigners residing here, and they may also be foreign workers, expatriates, students and family members.

The RM329 bil in tourism revenue includes both inbound and domestic tourism, and their share had been about equal over many years. In fact, the total number of domestic visitors is larger, at 260 million for last year.

Of course, inbound tourism receipts are more valuable, as our nation earns foreign exchange when foreign visitors spend money in our country.

In any case, services are intertwined and they support the healthy growth of one other. Destinations that rely heavily on one may experience unstable or limited growth.

This is easily noticeable at food and beverage outlets, retail stores and tourist-class hotels, where the number of foreign and domestic customers are about equal, and both are warmly welcomed by serving staff.

Popular destinations in Malaysia attract just as many foreign and domestic visitors, which is a testament to the healthy growth of our tourism industry. Whereas, not only foreign tourists shun the least popular states, but domestic visitors as well.

There is a correlation between local politicians and authorities in attracting or deterring visitors. All the labeling such as Visit My State Year will come to naught if people do not feel comfortable visiting a particular state.

Likewise, VM2026 will be a success as long as both foreign and domestic visitors travel in large numbers visiting popular destinations and spending freely knowing that they are getting their money’s worth. ‒ Oct 16, 2025
