“Vote against ‘traitors’ in Hulu Kelang,” Anwar reminds voters

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Hulu Kelang state constituency voters to vote against “traitors” in the forthcoming Selangor state polls this Saturday (Aug 12).

In his speech last night (Aug 6), Anwar recalled the story of Raja Mendeliar and Si Kitol, urging the over 2,000 people who attended the ceramah in Taman Permata, Gombak to vote for Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Juwairiya Zulkifli.

“I remember reading in The Malay Annals that traitors should first be put to death by impalement.

“Young individuals may be unaware of the punishment. Bamboo is taken and poked from the bottom to the criminal’s mouth till he dies. After that, the house will be burned to the ground, and the ground will be hoed and thrown into the sea,” the PH chairman said.

According to The Malay Annals, Si Kitol and Raja Mendeliar were treacherous, divisive individuals in 16th century Melaka, causing a situation that left Melaka vulnerable to the invading Portuguese, which led to the collapse of the Melaka Sultanate.

Anwar, who is also PKR president, was also quoted by Utusan Malaysia saying he had handpicked Juwairiya for the Hulu Kelang seat because he is confident in her abilities to unseat the former Hulu Kelang state assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

“We sent a woman leader; I think we must win this seat. I put a figure that can easily break Azmin. I gave instructions to (caretaker Selangor menteri besar) Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari to place Juwairiya.

“I want Hulu Kelang to teach how it turned out for Gombak (parliamentary seat),” he added, referring to Azmin’s loss against Amirudin in the last General Election (GE15).

In related news, Anwar said that Juwairiya will be given direct access to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) if she wins the Hulu Kelang seat at the Selangor state polls this weekend.

“I can’t make a lot of promises, but I can tell you that if she wins, I’ll give her direct access to the PMO,” the Tambun MP said, adding that he appreciates Juwairiya’s service, especially after the Wanita PKR deputy chief was supposed to contest a different seat.

Juwairiya, who is Amirudin’s political secretary, held the Bukit Melawati seat prior to the dissolution of the state assembly.

“Yes, she was supposed to contest somewhere else, but I thought about it and felt this seat is a must-win,” he said.

For the Hulu Kelang state constituency, Juwairiya will go against Selangor Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief Azmin who used to be PKR deputy president before joining Bersatu in the infamous “Sheraton Move” which had then led to the collapse of the first PH government led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 2020. – Aug 7, 2023
