IRATE over Communications and Multimedia Ministry defence on its decision to appoint Wan Izzana Fatimah Zabedah Mohamad Salleh to become a director at Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), netizens took to social media to voice their frustrations.
User Michael Tan echoed Kwan’s sentiments, adding: “
Netizen Aid Soraya Ridzuan lashed out saying:
Earlier this month, MDEC raised eyebrows after it appointed Wan Izzana, daughter of former minister Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil as its independent non-executive director.
Wan Izzana is named in suit by the Government, together with her father Datuk Dr Mohamad Salleh Ismail to recover monies lost under the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) scandal, which cost the Government millions in funding aimed at improving the national feedlot sector.
Others named in the suit are her siblings Wan Shahinur Izran and Wan Shahinur Izmir.
On Dec 8, Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa defended Wan Izzana’s appointment, saying she was highly qualified and should not be penalised for her parents’ problems.
“Wan Izzana is a young woman who has high qualifications. (She is) a graduate from Imperial College and Harvard as well. She has her own track record and experience.
“But now she is being linked to the problems faced by her family. I think we should be fair.
“If we as parents are facing problems, we do not want our young children to be harassed, when she has her own merits. Her appointment was made based on her merits,” Malaysiakini reported the Ketereh MP as saying in the Dewan Rakyat.
The elites reign, no matter what
However, Annuar did not address the fact that Wan Izzana was also sued by the Government for her alleged involvement in the NFC.
On that note, user Richard Yong opined that this was how the “Malay elites” control the gravy train and ensure power remains within their hands.
Netizen Roland Ooi bluntly put it by saying: “It’s called nepotism.”- Dec 12, 2021.
