THOSE who celebrate the new year outside of the safe confines of their home will undoubtedly feel a sliver of chill running up their spine when they come across the police.
But do the authorities always have to instill fear upon the onlooker?
In a viral yet heartwarming video on X by BERNAMA TV, a line of teenagers could be seen “ushering” in the new year by doing squats by the side of the road.

There were no teachers to dole out the punishments, but hilariously, it was done by the police officers instead.
According to BERNAMA TV, it happened at a police roadblock in conjunction with the year 2025 at Kuala Lumpur.
Netizens were tickled pink by the scene, and many praised the police officers for their effort.
Chen Boon Kwee said this is better than the caning done in public. He was likely making a subtle shot towards PAS.
Then there was m.r@yyanfm who added that this is a good beginning of the year for those wayward teenagers.
أزهار said sometimes, such punishments are more effective to educate them.
“It is just that people will ask, what is the power of the police to punish in such a manner? The current age is filled with too many smart people that such easy things become difficult,” he added.
Another netizen even tagged the Ministry of Education and said that now the job of the teacher has been delegated to the police.
“After the squats, they can call their mother and father to come collect their kids,” said Zahrin.
Sadly, however, netizen Wolfus was unimpressed. “This serves no real purpose other than to entertain some folks,” he said.
And for us, we think it is great to start the year 2025 with kindness, tolerance and love. The video shows exactly that.
Although hilarious, it also shows the soft and paternal side of the authorities which is good in an era where people view the police with suspicion and pessimism. —Jan 1, 2025
