“We took water from fire hydrant to protect lives, ease traffic congestion,” says Siti Zailah

RANTAU Panjang MP Datuk Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff clarified that she had mooted the idea of taking water from a fire hydrant to ease road congestions, which could also endanger the lives of the people living in the vicinity.

According to the PAS lawmaker, the residents in her constituency were faced with water supply shortages for days, prompting her to urge Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB) to provide water to affected parties.

“So, when we wanted to send water to the residents recently – about a week before Raya – the transport lorry got caught up on a congested road,” she clarified via a TikTok video today.

“It was dangerous because the lorries are big and heavy. That is why Kak Lah discussed with AKSB, with the firefighters, on how we want (to do this) so that we do not disrupt the roads and the people.

“AKSB then suggested for us to use the fire hydrants because Kelantan is different from other states.”

The video was published by the Kelantan Information and Communications Department (UPKN).

Elaborating, Siti Zailah said in other states, the pipelines used by firefighters are separate from the ones used to supply water to the public.

“But in Kelantan, the pipelines providing water to the community and used by the Fire and Rescue Department are the same,” she explained.

“Fire hydrant pipes and the AKSB water have the same access, therefore the fire hydrant does not have its own water supply. Water that goes through the fire hydrant, used for in the event of a fire or an emergency, is actually AKSB’s water.”

Recall that the PAS MP had previously claimed that she had received permission from Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB) to deliver clean water supply to residents who were facing water supply shortages for days, with the assistance of the Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department.

However, the Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department had since denied giving permission to Siti Zailah to take the water from the fire hydrant.

It was also reported on Sunday (May 7) that the Local Government Development Ministry will conduct a detailed probe on the PAS leader.

Astro Awani quoted Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming who confirmed the probe against Zailah.

He also issued a general reminder for elected representatives to show a good example and not misuse water from hydrants meant only for putting out fires.

“Water from the fire hydrant is not intended for normal daily use. If everyone used water from the hydrant, what happened in the event of a fire? This incident should not have happened,” Nga was quoted as saying. – May 9, 2023
