“Website blocking shows Anwar’s true colours,” says Wan Saiful

TASEK Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan has accused Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of restricting press freedom and has invited foreign observers to take note.

This came after reports that the authorities had partially banned access to the MalaysiaNow and Malaysia Today websites.

“Observers, national and international, should know by now that Anwar and his administration are nowhere near the reformist they pretend to be.

He also urged international and local observers to stop giving Anwar’s administration the benefit of the doubt.

“I urge international and local observers to stop giving Anwar’s administration the benefit of doubt. We should realise that this is Anwar’s true colours. He is vengeful, draconian, and incompetent,” he said in a statement today.

There is evidence that some internet service providers are blocking access to those websites. However, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has denied issuing any directive to do so.

“Blocking news websites was an abuse of enforcement powers to silence criticism of government incompetence,” added Wan Saiful.

He also pointed out that he is aware that Fahmi recently threatened social media activists with police action. Prior to that, several social media activists had been called for an investigation by the authorities.

“All these are symptoms of this administration’s attitude towards free speech.”

Fahmi has clarified that he was referring to those who use social media to propagate hatred based on race, religion and royalty. – June 29, 2023
