Wedding in hotels are so yesterday: Rare wedding feast with camps draws attention

SHOULDN’T Chinese weddings be held in the hotel? Recently a newly married Chinese couple took the limelight for having a very 1Malaysia themed feast where people from all races were invited.

But forget the hotels because hotels were so yesterday. They had some large tents erected at the housing compound and even had a Malay catering company prepare the meals.

According to one of the Malay participants, they had asam laksa, satay and nasi minyak.

However, netizen @guttapercha80 pointed out that curry chicken and nasi minyak was actually very common in a Chinese feast.

Also, @frankrxII claimed that the Chinese who organised their feasts in the hotel are usually the poor ones. “The rich ones usually do it with the camp outside their homes,” he said.

However, @IrvLim said this was the feast before the actual wedding. “Usually they will invite the neighbours and friends who can’t make it to the wedding banquet at the restaurant. This is also to increase the liveliness at the house,” he said.

On a separate note, @vvv7THV claimed it was boring that the Malays are now also having all their events at the hotels in Kuala Lumpur or at the event spaces.

@ommemon who recently attended an Indian wedding felt that the atmosphere resembled a night club.

Also, @k_wasabeez added that it was vital to attend a Chinese wedding feast as the effort they take to provide the halal catering is very much appreciated.

According to @elina_aziz, these kind of Malaysian Ala Kampung style feast are very rare nowadays.

“But it’s really so much fun and everyone on the street gets to participate. I am old fashioned but I had my wedding too like this many many years ago. Customs and traditions are rare now,” she added. —May 11, 2025
