What has the ICJ ordered Israel to do on Gaza war, and what’s next?

Lara Elborno, a Palestinian-American international lawyer and co-host of the Palestine Pod, provided a critical analysis of the recent ICJ order during Al Jazeera’s live from Paris.

She emphasised that despite efforts to spin the order as a win for Israel, the court’s rejection of all legal arguments and the imposition of provisional measures, including an immediate cessation of military actions harming Palestinians, reveal the court’s recognition of the failure to address Israel’s actions. Elborno argued that complying with the order would necessitate a halt to military operations in Gaza, challenging the feasibility of providing aid without ceasing bombardment. Notably, she highlighted the international skepticism, including insights from legal scholars and the South Africa foreign minister, regarding Israel’s willingness and ability to adhere to the court’s directives.
