“Why only civil servants”: Cuepacs chided for seeking RM1.8k minimum wage for Gov’t staff

YESTERDAY, the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) president Datuk Adnan Mat urged the Government to raise the minimum wage of civil servants to RM1,800.

He also said that the hike was needed so as to help public servants in coping with the rising cost of goods and live more comfortably.

“We are not comfortable with the current salary as the price of goods keep increasing, hence the higher expenditure. This situation is unfair for civil servants with the income they’re earning.

“We have proposed to the Government that their minimum monthly pay be raised to RM1,800. Although the Government has approved the amount of RM1,500 for government-linked company (GLC) employees, we still want it at RM1,800,” The Star reported him as saying.

However, Adnan’s proposal was ill-received by several quarters, who later took to social media to criticise the Cuepacs chief.

“Why only civil servants?” asked user Nancie Bernie Wong.

Netizen Nyak Zahaslan mocked Adnan’s statement by stating:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced earlier this month that the Government would hike up minimum wage to RM1,500 for all sectors come May 1.

“Immune” from economic downturn

However, the Government later backtracked following opposition from several business sections and announced only selected sectors would be compelled to hike up the minimum age to RM1,500.

“Wages needed to be increased to enable the people at the grassroots to spend their money and at the same time improve the economy faster,” Bernama reported Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M Saravanan as saying.

On that note, several netizens said claimed that civil servants seem to “immune” from pay cuts despite an economic downturn and yet they seem to ask for more.
