Will Malaysians who own Singapore cars be jailed and fined for pumping RON95?

STRICT action will be taken against foreign-registered vehicles found using Malaysian license plates to purchase subsidised RON95 petrol.

Johor Road Transport Department (JPJ) Director Azmil Zainal Adnan is quoted as saying that foreign vehicles with Malaysian plates can be prosecuted under Section 108(3)(f) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“Under this section, those found guilty can face penalties including a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both,” he said.

A video went viral showing a driver of a Singaporean car switching to Malaysian plates before filling up on subsidised RON95 petrol.

Netizens are asking whether Malaysians who own foreign-registered vehicles will also be punished altogether.

A user on X said Malaysians working in Singapore, who are Singapore permanent residents, are also driving Singapore registered cars.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday said he is not a “Robin Hood”, who takes from the rich to give to the poor.

But instead, he says, he wants the T15 group to pay the actual cost of RON95. Anwar also said he was simply acting fairly in assisting the lower-income groups.

“If we want to take care of the poor, we must have sufficient resources. We inherited debts amounting to RM1.5 trillion, and we do not wish to tax the people heavily. We are only levying a modest tax on the ultra-wealthy.

“This is not Robin Hood, but merely a withdrawal of subsidies,” he said during the Temu Anwar Dialogue programme at the Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia. – Nov 3, 2024
