CALL IT day-dreaming that Penang Perikatan Nasional (PN) supporters will turn up in droves for state election victory celebration at KOMTAR in George Town tomorrow night (Aug 12) for the state is deemed a DAP-Pakatan Harapan (PH) stronghold.
Even though this is probably a rumour that has gotten very out of proportion, the state police does not wish to get caught off guard, according to the Penang police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner W. Pusphanathan.
“We have approximately 200 personnel in the KOMTAR vicinity to undertake routine tasks such as ensuring satisfactorily traffic flow in addition to ensuring that the election process runs smoothly,” he told a media conference at the Penang Contingent Police Headquarters today.
All in all, Pusphanathan who also acted as the state police spokesman for the Penang state poll said a total of 5,776 policemen are to be stationed inside 334 polling stations throughout Penang tomorrow.
“Another 349 will be on duty outside the polling stations to ensure smooth traffic. All candidates are reminded to stop all campaign activities from midnight today (Aug 11).”
In a related development, Pusphanathan said there was a high turnout of 95.01% among Penang’s police and military personnel during Tuesday’s (Aug 8) early voting. “Some 10,730 of the 11,294 police and military personnel in Penang voted,” he added. – Aug 11, 2023
