With rumours of LV bags sighted in Putrajaya, netizens want spot checks on civil servants

RECENTLY, A PKR MP urged Putrajaya to mandate asset declarations for lawmakers, suspecting other coalition parties may lack the will.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat MP for Subang Wong Chen suggests starting with public servants if allies are uninterested.

However, Cuepacs has said today that civil servants must declare assets every five years under the new system, with warnings for non-compliance.

While Wong Chen was probably not aware that Civil Servants were already obligated to do so, netizens chipped in to state: “Just do spot checks on the homes and families of Grade 19 staff managing projects.

Surely someone will slip up, especially for projects under 100k. Also, review their history of overseas trips.”

The suggestion implies a lack of trust in Grade 19 officers, proposing invasive measures like spot checks and monitoring personal activities.

While accountability in managing public funds is important, it’s equally crucial to ensure investigations are conducted ethically, without generalizing or assuming guilt.

Building transparent systems and providing proper oversight mechanisms could be a more constructive approach.

The matter became a topic of conversation following revelations by an X user who boldly claimed that there are civil servants in Putrajaya flaunting their designer items from the likes of Louis Vuitton.

Another claim is that this sort of thing has been practised by government workers for years, it is unsure how true these claims are.

A user claimed they were employed in a high-end optician store. The user stated that there have been a few civil servants buying high-end glasses but requested him to write that they’re prescription glasses in the receipt. He refused to do so.

Besides, a netizen said that these bags could possibly be counterfeit. The user claims that some e-commerce platforms may have such bags for sale at around RM200.

Sometimes, there are counterfeit bags that look similar to the original piece selling for slightly more than RM200.

Others noted that seeing several Malaysian women hanging around malls like TRX, Pavilion and KLCC during non-peak hours on weekdays showing off their branded items.

They wondered what the husbands of these women were working as. —Dec 8, 2024
