SUBANG MP Wong Chen urged netizens to support Sarawak Report’s editor Clare Rewcastle Brown in her bid to crowdfund to pay her debts to Terengganu Sultanah Nur Zahirah.
Rewcastle Brown is renowned for breaking the 1MDB stories that led to the imprisonment of former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak and she lost a case against the Sultanah. She now has to pay 75,000 pounds or RM445,000 as a result of the lawsuit.
However, netizens do not entirely agree with the MP, asking why people should pay for someone’s wrongdoing.
Rewcastle Brown initiated a fundraiser to cover the Court of Appeal’s mandated damages despite planning an appeal. She said the RM300,000 in damages and RM120,000 in costs, while less than the initial demand, are a onerous burden on the three defendants in the case.
Besides Rewcastle Brown, the other two defendants named in the suit are Gerakbudaya Enterprise publisher Chong Ton Sin and printer Vinlin Press Sdn Bhd.
