PUCHONG MP Yeo Bee Yin whose parliamentary constituency is in proximity to the Putra Heights gas pipeline tragedy has become target of the pro-opposition faction after she rallied behind DAP’s one-week (April 2-9) online donation drive in aid of the affected residents.
This came about after the Malaysian Chinese News in a Facebook post ticked off the DAP lawmaker for having the indecency to appeal for donation from “commoners who are languishing from your (party’s) poor economic formula” when she could have sought her billionaire husband for contribution.
Editor’s Note: Yeo is married to IOI Properties Group Bhd’s CEO Lee Yeow Seng on March 11, 2019. He is the youngest son of IOI Group founder and tycoon the late Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng.
Fortunately for the former energy, science, technology, environment and climate change minister, a few supposedly generous souls came to back her up.
“How do you know IOI doesn’t donate? You mean you want YB Yeo to publish the amount and make netizens feel small the 10s, 50s or 100s we want to contribute?” a netizen rightly lashed out.
“Mind you, there are many super generous donors who always insist on staying anonymous.”
Another backer further justified on the two-term MP’s (2018: Bakri; 2022: Puchong) behalf that seeking public donation in this matter has nothing to do with Yeo’s husband being a wealthy businessman.
“If your family is rich, that’s your business. Hahaha B40 mentality indeed. Don’t know how to differentiate between work and family,” asserted the commenter as she somehow assuaged DAP bashing for mooting the donation drive.
“People like you can’t be successful because takers have no limit while givers must set a limit. You probably have never heard of this because you’ve never been successful or have read deep enough.”
Another commenter also stepped in to clear the air over why “the donation money has to go into DAP’s bank account”.
“Public donation can’t be made to personal (bank) account …. Has to enter into that of a political party or company … This is subject to annual audit.”
But nobody was able to clear the air as to what has happened to proceeds of the Tabung PH 1.0 fund-raising campaign when Pakatan Harapan came to power in 2018.
Nevertheless, one commenter sarcastically posed the question as to whether the poster himself has contributed towards the cause.
At the end of the day, one presumably Madani government backer reckoned that “he trusts DAP more than PAS” in this matter. – April 4, 2025
