PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has no qualms about providing evidence to former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to indicate that he amassed fortune to profit himself while in power.
The PKR leader was given a letter of demand by Dr Mahathir on March 27 requesting that he back up his statements or face legal repercussions.
“I don’t want to fight. He has asked for proof, I will give (him) proof, no problem,” Anwar said during a dialogue session with students at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Shah Alam today.
The Tambun MP added that while Dr Mahathir’s governance had its strengths, the former premier had also caused a lot of damage.
Anwar also pointed out that Dr Mahathir claimed that Malays are lazy, ungrateful and forgetful.
“Is it true that this is the Malay culture? The answer is no.”
Without delving into specifics, Anwar said that many influential people of the majority race are also thinkers and intellectuals.
“How can Malays be deemed lazy when Melaka, for example, was a popular international cosmopolitan and trading hub? This is an issue of the leaders’ thinking.”
Furthermore, Anwar noted that laziness and forgetfulness are not exclusive to Malays, but that all races are susceptible to such traits.
Moreover, Anwar’s lawyers said on Tuesday (April 4) that they will respond to Dr Mahathir’s letter of demand by April 17. DAP’s Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo will act as Anwar’s lead counsel. — April 7, 2023
