Zahid: “GE15 results a ‘big signal’ from the people”

BARISAN Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the results of the 15th general election (GE15) are a “big signal” from the people after winning only 24 of the 220 parliamentary seats (as of 1.50am).

According to the latest data from the Election Commission (EC), Pakatan Harapan has won 62 seats in total while Perikatan Nasional has won 43 seats and PAS, 22 seats.

“BN accepts and respects the decision of the people in GE15. We remain committed to forming a stable government and we are ready to set aside our previous differences,” he said in a statement.

“In the near term, BN will focus on how we can return the party to its former strengths to face current challenges and better comprehend the needs of the younger generation.”

The UMNO president further stressed that BN is always committed to seeing a strong relationship between the states in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak.

“We are ready to be the bridge that strengthens this bond,” he announced.

According to unofficial results, Zahid is leading the race for the Bagan Datuk parliamentary seat with 15,736 votes with Pakatan Harapan’s Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin trailing with 15,192 votes and Perikatan Nasional’s Dr Muhammad Faiz Na’aman garnering 8,283 votes.

The constituency has 58,183 voters.

Among the big names in BN to have lost their fights in GE15 include Khairy Jamaluddin (Sungai Buloh), Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid (Padang Terap), Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz (Kuala Selangor), Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (Gua Musang), Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (Gerik), Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Rahim (Baling), Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran (Sungai Siput) and Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican (Kepala Batas). – Nov 20, 2022
