In an Instagram post on having achieved more than 100,000 subscribers on the its Youtube channel, KJ posted;

“We were inspired by a political podcast in the UK called @restispolitics. We felt that a similar podcast could be useful in Malaysia to present issues from all sides in simple terms. With politics becoming so tribal, we wanted ideas to thrive in a centre ground free from spin, manipulation and post-truth.”

Tribal politics

Indeed, the Keluar Sekejap podcast is a magnet for those who seek to understand realpolitik – a system of politics or principles based on practical rather than moral or ideological considerations – in Malaysia.

Listeners appreciate the intelligent discussions, sometimes with guests who are down to earth, analytical and critical minus the chest-thumping rhetoric of a political rally.

Khairy Jamaluddin (left) and Shahril Hamdan[/caption]

Coming from two young political outcasts of UMNO, their insights and opinions are both eye opening and – at times – mind blowing. Even if you don’t agree with everything, it’s nice to know another point of view.

In Episode 54 in a collaboration with TIBER, a podcast hosted by Astro Awani’s anchors Luqman Hariz, Najib Aroff and Ibrahim Sani, KJ was asked if he was disillusioned and might leave politics for good.

To which KJ replied that politics had taken a toll on his physical and mental health. He said this could also be because he and Shahril had not cultivated a tribe of followers who were pentaksub (obsessed) as they were both centrists (a political moderate).

Asked if there was no room for centrists in Malaysia, KJ said he didn’t know “because tribalism defeated him”. Tribalism is defined as designating, characterised by or relating to a strong sense of loyalty to one’s own tribe, party or group.

The best explanation for political tribalism that I could find was by Shiao Chong, a Christian pastor who is the editor-in-chief of The Banner.

Chong explains that “political tribalism is where loyalty to the political tribe is more important than loyalty to anything else. It means that tribe members will go to any lengths to defend their tribe’s leader”.

“Tribalism means the tribe never concedes an inch to other tribes. It is an ‘us versus them’ mentality where ‘them’ are seen as morally suspect and morally dangerous while ‘us’ are saints by comparison.”

That is spot on for many political parties in Malaysia. What KJ refers to as tribalism in this sense would probably be UMNO loyalists.

Personality cult

In Malaysian politics, there used to be the cult of personality defined as “an excessive public admiration for or devotion to a famous person, especially a political leader” around Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (Tun M).

Considering that he was prime minister (PM) for 22 years – from 1981 to 2003 – Tun M held considerable influence. His second term as PM lasted only 22 months – from 2018 to 2020 – when he lost much of the adulation.

During good times: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahin (left) and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad[/caption]

Instead, the personality cult built around his former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim whom he sacked in 1998 had grown into the formidable Reformasi movement that later became a political party – now known as PKR.

PKR would later join up with other parties such as DAP to form the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition that would even include Tun M’s former party BERSATU prior to the 14th general elections (GE14). Anwar would be made 10th PM (PMX) in 2022 after GE15.

Has Anwar’s personality cult lost some lustre since he became PMX?

It would be difficult to pin Anwar to a political “tribe” besides PKR because he is now PM of the unity government (PH joined up with UMNO, DAP and other parties) when no single party won a simple majority in GE15.

The DAP would certainly qualify as a tribal political party as its secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook pledged unconditional support to PH to ensure that Anwar could become PM.

Has Anwar taken over the role of tribal leader for UMNO now that its president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is the Deputy PM? Does being a political tribal leader make Anwar more appealing to the elusive Malay support?

That remains to be seen. – Oct 3, 2023

Niza Shimi was a former journo with a leading mainstream English media.

The views expressed are solely of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Focus Malaysia.
If political tribalism defeated KJ, what political tribe does Anwar lead?
Just when UMNO thought they have cast out the undesirables who dared to rock their already shaky boat, both former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin and suspended UMNO forner information chief Shahril Hamdan seem to have new-found fame with a growing audience of followers, especially among young Malaysians.
AN UMNO leader has warned voters against choosing a people’s representative who had to ask for donations from the public to cover their expenses as a member of the state legislative assembly (ADUN).

Addressing a crowd in Simpang Pelangai ahead of the Pelangai by-election this weekend, Peramu Jaya assemblyman Datuk Mohd Nizar Najib expressed his concerns that opposition assemblymen would cite not having an allocation in the constituency as an excuse to get out of helping their constituents.

“I’m worried they will ask voters to buy them an office, buy aircons and fans which has happened elsewhere. In other words, a socialisation process to manufacture consent to those in power.

Gone are the days when university students rallied and protested against social injustices perpetrated in the country. The existence of oppressive laws are not the sole reason why there is lack of student activism in the campuses.

Climate of conservatism

If students are asked about their non-activism, they will invariably point out not just the AUKU but other laws and regulations that might be detrimental to their activism. In other words, it has become a self-fulfilling prophecy on the part of inactive students to blame the oppressive laws for their lack of activism.

Student activists march during a protest over a financial scandal involving state fund, 1MDB in Kuala Lumpur on August 27, 2016 (Pic credit: MOHD RASFAN/AFP/Getty Images)[/caption]

Hypothetically, if these laws are removed overnight, I don’t think that students will suddenly jump into activism. While laws have a deterrent effect, they by themselves are not the sole reason why there is hardly any student activism in universities in the country.

The absence of student activism can be largely attributed to the long conditioning processes undertaken by regimes in power to ensure political stability and longevity. Manufacturing consent through the long process of hegemonic politics is a correct and sure way of ensuring regime stability.

In this respect, laws and other punitive measures of seeking compliance are necessary as a last resort but not the most effective way. In the words of Italian philosopher Antonio Gramsci, regimes intending to stay in power will not resort to repression but to build consensus or hegemony over a long period.

Hegemony refers to the consent people give to a political regime to stay in power. Similarly, if students are continuously oppressed to beget regime support, it might not serve the needs of the hegemony.

In the Malaysian context, there is a climate of conservatism among university students in not engaging in activism because they are subscribing to the hegemony of the regime. If students generally support the government in power through the hegemonic process, then why need the oppressive laws?

Passive students

Universities are not aloof from the larger society; in many ways, they represent the microcosm of the society. Just like the larger society, student politics in the universities have come to mirror ethnic and religious politics of the society.

Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy[/caption]

Given the primacy of ethnic and religious politics in the campus, there are alignments either in favour of the government or in favour of the opposition.

As long as campus politics do not go beyond the ethnic and religious boundaries, the administration is happy not to intervene or regulate students’ activities by way of laws or regulations.

It is basically the manufacturing of consent for the hegemonic order that has prevailed in the universities. There is hardly any attempts to come together as students immaterial of ethnicity or religion.

Given the prevailing consent given by the students to the hegemonic order of the regime in power, student activism might not be there. Or alternatively, student activism might be artificially induced for regime support.

Even if the laws curbing student activism is removed, there is no automatic return to active politics among students.

It is this hegemonic order that slowly and surely manufactures consent to regime stability. At the same time, the process of consent serves as powerful antidote against students’ oppositional politics.

This conservatism among students in Malaysia is not unique to the country. The general decline of student activism across countries relate to how powerful ruling regimes have used sophisticated strategies to overcome dissent.

When ministers of the Madani government are going around urging students to play a critical role in the development of society, what they are essentially saying is that students should support the efforts of the government.

So much for student activism in Malaysia! – Oct 3, 2023

Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy is the former DAP state assemblyman for Perai. Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor[/caption]

Humiliation of human race

Firstly, I will discuss the wrongness of using derogatory name calling on a person or a whole race like the Chinese in Malaysia from the perspective of Islam.

The term apek is unanimously accepted even by Kamus Dewan to mean an old and frail Chinese man. The term itself in normal Malay parlance many years ago when I was growing up was not meant to be derogatory.

However, to use that phrase to mean “any Chinese with short pants” smack of a racial slur using religion as its basis for this name-calling.

In the book “Bimbingan Mu’minin” which is the Malay translation of an abridged version of Imam Ghazali’s magnum opus “Ihya Ulumuddin” published many hundred years ago, the author clearly warned Muslims against using their speeches to dishonour anyone purposely.

Prophet Muhammad himself forbade Muslims from name-calling to dishonour the enemies of Islam, warning them s that their uncontrolled speeches may result in them being placed in Hell.

Here in Malaysia, we only have opposition parliamentarians, not soldiers out to kill one another.

Clearly, the PAS leader who attacked the Chinese in his apek seluar pendek slur is clearly making PAS a political party that dishonours the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. Why? No PAS leader has reprimanded the PAS leader who has uttered those words of dishonour.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCeBLZGBweU

Secondly, we all know that the principle of Kesopanan dan Kesusilaan in the Rukun Negara (National Principles), demand that we respect each other’s culture and heritage.

It is highly doubtful that PAS leaders could misunderstand the Malay words in the Rukun Negara to the extent of allowing their man to utter the unspeakable phrase apek seluar pendek. PAS clearly has no interest in nation-building or honouring the Rukun Negara.

Disregarding history

Thirdly, PAS has also dishonoured the history of Islam in Tanah Melayu itself. Prof Khairuddin Al-Juneid, in his wonderful and masterly book “Islam in Malaysia: An Entwined History” elaborated the role that Laksamana Cheng Ho and other Chinese Muslim emissaries from China had played to the Nusantara and how they offered safe haven for Melaka from the threat of Siamese attacks.

The presence of “apek-apek” from China who were Muslims represented a power that the other empires who were thinking of invading the Muslim kingdoms in Tanah Melayu had to put a permanent pause in their battle plans.

For the information of the ignorant PAS leader, these “apek-apek” were already the intellectual, military and spiritual power long before PAS was born.

According to Prof Khairuddin, Cheng Ho was instrumental to demand that the Siamese cease any future interference in Melaka’s affairs and send gifts to China as a form of apology for its previous treatment of the Malay state.

It was purely from Cheng Ho’s firm stance toward the Siamese that Melaka grew into a center for the propagation of Islam without any interruption until Cheng Ho’s departure in 1431 (pages 96-99).

Thus, if PAS keeps silent on the foul mouth of one of its leaders disparaging the dignity of Chinese in Malaysia, the party is guilty of dishonouring Malaysia’s history, the Rukun Negara and the adab or mannerism of Islam itself as taught by the Prophet Muhammad.

I, therefore, call on all Malaysians to demand that PAS apologise to Malaysian Chinese openly and unreservedly. We cannot be a nation if one group of people dishonours our faith in Islam, our dignity as a culture or a race, and also the history of our entwined heritage. – Oct 3, 2023

Prof Dr Mohd Tajuddin Mohd Rasdi is Professor of Architecture at a local university and his writing reflects his personal opinion entirely.
