45 years of SEGi: Evolution spurs solid academic presence

GLOBALISATION has changed the demands of the human capital market.

In addition, digitalisation has gone full throttle with the global adoption of “going online” driven by the “new normal” culture brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Suffice to say, today’s and tomorrow’s workforce must be highly skilled, adaptive, and resilient in a post-pandemic market.

While having the right academic qualifications are necessary to secure the employment of choice, jobseekers – fresh graduates and job-hunting professionals – need to continuously equip themselves with the relevant skills, including digital skills, to be more marketable and make career progress.

Understanding the challenges and the needs of graduates upon entering the highly competitive job market are among the fundamental pillars that drive the evolution of SEGi University & Colleges.

Since its inception in 1977, SEGi has worked diligently to transform its group of institutions into what it is known today: one of Malaysia’s leading private higher education providers with approximately 18,000 students in five campuses across the Klang Valley, Penang, and Sarawak.

The establishment of these campuses is the epitome of SEGi’s brand promise, “The Best In You, Made Possible”.

SEGi’s strong presence in the education industry was built upon the institution’s dedication and commitment to delivering world-class niche programmes, including first-rate certifications for working professionals.

In March 2022, the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) shared that Malaysia’s graduate employability rate was 85.5% last year.

While this is an improvement compared to the 84.4% in 2020, more can be done to improve the statistics. It is an ambition of SEGi to achieve 100% employability for its students upon graduation.

While COVID-19 has indeed sped up digital transformation by several years, SEGi has gone digital since 2013 and subsequently carved a name for itself as the pioneer institution to offer academic programmes online with the approval of MOHE.

Building on this success, SEGi sets on increasing its efforts of digitalising learning processes, including upgrading campus facilities to keep up with international standards of higher education in the digital age.

The institution champions diversity in higher education which is reflected in the significant ratio of international students from nearly 100 countries in all SEGi campuses.

This thus encourages healthy interaction and cultural exchange between the institution’s local and international students, giving them a global perspective.

Diversity also includes SEGi’s delivery of industry-driven experiential learning into the classrooms, allowing students to gain valuable on-the-job knowledge and experience a real-world work environment alongside key industry players.

Acquiring new skills is crucial to success in today’s changing world. Therefore, SEGi strives to continue developing effective compliance, enhancing its sustainability and corporate responsibility efforts to benefit our students and future generations of Malaysia.
