Report: Nurul Izzah to contest in Penang state polls?

PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar is slated to contest in the Penang state polls and will be appointed to a key position should Pakatan Harapan retain power in the state, revealed a source.

According to the source who spoke to FMT on condition of anonymity, the former Permatang Pauh MP’s participation in the state polls could potentially boost her party’s chances of retaining seats in the state assembly and help secure votes from women.

Recall that Nurul Izzah suffered a shocking loss during the 15th general election (GE15) when she failed to retain the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency which was won by PAS candidate Fawwaz Mohamed with a 5,272-vote majority in a four-cornered contest.

However, it remains unclear which of the 40 seats in the state seats she will be offered to contest.

Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow previously said that the state government is sticking with its original plan to have its State Assembly dissolved in June to make way for the state election.

Chow, who is also Penang Pakatan Harapan chairman said according to the plan, the dissolution of the State Assembly is scheduled for the third or fourth week of June.

Prior to this, five other states, namely Selangor, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu and Negeri Sembilan had also agreed to dissolve their respective state assemblies in the last two weeks of June. – May 31, 2023
