MUDA not contesting in Pulai, Simpang Jeram polls, to back Amanah instead

JOHOR MUDA will not be contesting in the upcoming Pulai parliamentary and the Simpang Jeram state by-elections next month as a sign of respect for late Amanah leader Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.

Instead, state MUDA executive chairman Azrol Rajani said his party will give its full support to the two Amanah candidates to honour Salahuddin, who was the late domestic trade and cost of living minister.

“Johor MUDA wishes the best of luck to Amanah and Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the by-election,” Azrol was reported as saying by Berita Harian today (Aug 22).

“We hope the Amanah candidates will win big in the by-elections to continue Salahuddin’s legacy for the sake of the people.

“Johor MUDA is committed to the people’s aspirations and will continue to fight for justice and changes for a better future.”

Azrol said MUDA had a close relationship with Salahuddin and credited the latter for invaluable contributions to the party’s Johor chapter since MUDA was founded in September 2020.

“Allahyarham Salahuddin gave us valuable insights and advice during our party’s early formation. We appreciate his goodwill in strengthening our struggle,” he said.

On Saturday (Aug 19), Amanah announced that Johor Amanah vice chairperson Suhaizan Kaiat will contest the Pulai parliamentary seat, while Nazri Abdul Rahman will stand for the Simpang Jeram state seat.

The two candidates were chosen by an election committee led by Amanah vice-president Adly Zahari, secretary-general Datuk Dr Hatta Ramli, vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar, and other division and state-level leaders.

The Election Commission (EC) has fixed nomination day for both by-elections on August 26 and polling day on September 9, while early voting is on September 5.

The two by-elections are called after Salahuddin, who was the incumbent for both seats, died on July 23 due to a brain hemorrhage. He was 61. – Aug 22, 2023
