Is it true that a full tank of Petron fuel gives more mileage compared to Petronas?

A NETIZEN’S observation on social media about getting different mileage per full tank from fuel different petroleum companies has sparked a lively debate.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), @warnabilla claimed that she seemed to get more mileage from a full tank of Petron fuel compared to that of Petronas.

While no scientific or lab-like experiments had been carried out, the poster’s simple monitoring of the fuel gauge during daily commutes has elicited plenty of responses with the post having been viewed close to 2 million times at the time of writing.

Here is a sample of netizens’ reactions to the bold claim.

Of course, the post led to others sharing their own experiences with other brands.

Of course, there were plenty of comments based on conjecture and hearsay.

Some tried to give a more detailed analysis with more thorough observations based on personal experiences.

One netizen made the point that mileage was not the only barometer, reminding netizens of the on-going boycott related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Another netizen echoed this sentiment by citing previous CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiatives that determined which brand was going into their vehicles’ petrol tanks.

Some netizens sought to debunk the observations of the poster and other netizens by claiming it was just a placebo effect.

One netizen correctly pointed out that more accurate data was needed for a proper comparison due to the many variables.

Given that the spiralling cost of living is biting into ordinary Malaysians’ disposable incomes, it is no surprise that posts such as these are gaining traction. Citizens are desperately looking for ways to save on costs.

Given that petroleum companies are quite literally minting it, perhaps they could come up with loyalty programmes or redemption schemes that truly reward consumers.

The goodwill from such an exercise will have long-lasting effect and will go some way towards debunking some of the myths surrounding petrol consumption. Wonder what EV (electric vehicle) owners have to say though. – March 6, 2024
