9 M’sians injured on SIA flight after emergency landing in Bangkok

NINE Malaysian passengers, including a crew member, were injured when a Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight from London to Singapore made an emergency landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport due to severe turbulence.

One of the injured is in critical but stable condition, according to the Foreign Ministry.

The affected individuals are receiving medical treatment in various hospitals in Bangkok for both physical and internal injuries.

“The (Malaysian) Embassy has been coordinating with local authorities and hospitals, with consular officers visiting Malaysians who were admitted to several hospitals in Bangkok to provide consular assistance,” added the ministry.

The SIA flight encountered severe turbulence en route to Singapore, prompting the emergency diversion. Among the 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board, 16 were Malaysians. The turbulence resulted in several injuries and one fatality.

Suvarnabhumi Airport director Kittipong Kittikachorn reported that a 73-year-old Englishman suffered a heart attack and passed away on the flight.

The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft successfully landed in Bangkok at 3.45pm local time. SIA is working closely with Thai authorities to ensure medical assistance is provided to the injured passengers.

Moreover, a team from SIA has been dispatched to Bangkok to offer further support. – May 22, 2024
