IN a previous article, newbie hikers were introduced to some basic warm-up exercises before embarking on a hike. Part one dealt with exercises for the upper body. Part two deals with the lower body:
The hips
Stand upright with your hands on your hips. Lift one foot and swing it back and forth 10 times. Your foot should nearly touch your bottom when swinging back and your leg should be parallel to the ground when swinging forward. Ensure the movement is dynamic yet controlled. Switch legs and repeat for another 10 swings.
The knees
Stand and raise your left thigh until it forms a right angle, like a flamingo. Slightly bend your standing leg for better stability. Rotate your lower leg 10 times in one direction, then 10 times in the other, as if drawing a perfect circle in the air with your foot, which should remain stationary. Then switch legs and repeat.
The ankles
Using the same position as for the knee warm-up, rotate your ankle in a circle 10 times in one direction, then 10 times in the other. Switch feet and repeat the exercise with the other ankle.
Now, imagine living in a locale that will allow you to partake in the above exercises every day. Hiijauan Broga is a mixed-integrated development located adjacent to popular hiking trail – Broga Hill in Semenyih.
