WHEN we thought the headline of sinkholes in Kuala Lumpur would subside, there comes another one, rearing its ugly head to remind us of the consequences of our unrestrained urbanisation.
Bernama in today’s post on X stated that another sinkhole has developed just 50 metres from the one that swallowed the Indian national at Jalan Masjid.

It was reported that the incident occurred at 2.30pm following a heavy downpour. Dang Wangi District Police Chief ACP Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman could be seen observing the area around the sink hole.
The latest news has sparked concerns over the safety of Kuala Lumpur, especially among netizens who shared the X post in droves.
One netizen suggested that maybe, people should avoid Kuala Lumpur during the bad weather for fear of being engulfed by a sinkhole.
According to another netizen, the area around the MRT and LRT at Masjid Jamek is also at risk. He further observed that the place about Bank Muamalat is littered with holes.
Netizen Ayie Sayreng prayed for the price of properties in Kuala Lumpur to fall.
While this may be the case for the properties around Jalan Masjid, we sincerely doubt the astronomical price of properties in Kuala Lumpur to fall significantly.
A significant dip in the price of properties will be a catalyst to increase home ownership among Selangorians, but on the flipside, is this also an indication that we are less safe?
Perhaps we should take heed from the appearance of these sinkholes as a sign that the land is no longer able to hold the weight of our city. – Aug 28, 2024
