In an interview with Al Jazeera, Raed al-Saleh, head of the Syrian Civil Defence, known as the White Helmets, described prisons run by the al-Assad government as “human slaughterhouses”. He said the torture in these prisons was severe under intelligence officers’ supervision, leaving many prisoners in deteriorating health and experiencing severe mental and physical issues.
