A MAN was heartbroken when his girlfriend secretly married another man. He had spent money on gifts and an RM500 monthly allowance throughout their 5-year relationship.
They met in 2018, grew closer in 2020, and planned to marry. In 2024, she stopped responding and later married someone else. He felt betrayed, having invested so much in their relationship.

Netizens are upset with both the man and the woman. An X user stated the man was following his heart rather than thinking logically.
For the most part, it is not recommended for a man to give a girlfriend money and gifts before marrying as a breakup is always possible.
Subsequently, users criticised the man, stating that his “desperation” should not be a basis for seeking sympathy.
They argued it is unreasonable for someone to lavishly spend on their girlfriend and then complain about not receiving the outcome they had hoped for.
Another user states that it would not be wise to spend on our significant others before marrying them.
The money would be put to better use if they were spent on the man’s mother. The user adds that spending money on a significant other will not promise you anything.
Others are puzzled with regards to the phrase “nafkah couple” as “nafkah” is used for those who are married.
The word is typically used for husbands financially supporting their wives, or giving some financial support to their wives. —Jan 5, 2025
