Police detains man who threatened comedian Harith Iskander

POLICE have detained a 31-year-old man suspected of issuing death threats against comedian Harith Iskander and his family.

The arrest followed a report by Harith’s manager and ex-wife, Dr. Jezamine Lim, who reported two incidents.

The suspect allegedly threatened Harith over a statement about pork and sent a threatening message with an image of the manager’s child.

The suspect is under remand until January 28 and is being investigated under Sections 506 and 509 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and insulting modesty.

On Friday, PETRONAS Philharmonic Hall announced that it cancelled the stand-up comedy show by Harith Iskander originally scheduled for Saturday.

The police have recorded the statement from Harith regarding a post on his Facebook account about the ‘ham’ scandal that took Malaysia by storm last week.

Comedian Harith Iskander initially amused fans online with a joke about a coffee labeled “kopi ham sap,” questioning its suggestive name and moral implications.

The post, accompanied by a photo of the menu, went viral, sparking laughter but also backlash, leading to police reports against him.

The joke coincided with a recent halal controversy involving “ham and cheese” sandwiches at KK Mart outlets, where the “ham” was found to have improper halal certification. —Jan 26, 2025
