Earn five-figure salary upon graduation; just learn Japanese, Korean, advises recruiter

IMAGINE taking a handsome five figure pay packet. And that, too, as a fresh graduate!

No scam here, just learn a foreign language!

This was the advice proffered by professional recruiter CV Reviewer | Yasmin (@reviewbyyasmin) on the X platform.

The poster was responding to a post by Among of east (@EastMister0822) who shared that such plump job offers were for customer service-related roles.

Workers would be handsomely rewarded for handling simple tasks such as answering calls and replying e-mails on condition they speak Japanese.

This was why so many Malaysian engineers trained in Japan do not enter their field of speciality. Why should they when they can only earn RM5,000+ as a fresh graduate engineer in Malaysia?

The poster also pinned a comment which highlighted the in-demand foreign languages – Mandarin, Japanese and Korean – in Business Outsourcing Processes (BPO). Even Indonesian speakers were highly prized, much more than English and Bahasa Malaysia speakers, according to this commenter.

One netizen wondered aloud how much an experienced staff would earn given this was just the starting pay for fresh grads.

One netizen sought to confirm the poster’s claim by stating that his inbox was full with offers. Why? He could speak basic Japanese. And the lowest offer was around RM7,000/month!

Another commenter added that linguistic abilities backed by technical know-how would put the applicant in a better position.

Another netizen shared of industries other than BPO that were willing to pay high salaries if a person had the relevant linguistic skills.

One commenter asked about the working culture in Japan to which the poster provided a detailed explanation.

Was a move abroad necessary enquired another netizen? The poster claimed there were job opportunities in Malaysia but mostly in the Cyberjaya vicinity.

However, one netizen sought to dismiss this assertion as he claims to have two internationally-recognised certificates which have not brought any benefits whatsoever.

The poster responded by saying to properly benefit, an ‘advanced’ level of proficiency was required. Moreover, German may not be so marketable although “Mandarin speakers are highly sought after”.

She went on to contend that it certainly would require hard work but it would nevertheless open up opportunities. Furthermore, there are a lot of free resources, thus people should at the very least consider it.

All said and done, learning new languages will certainly benefit an individual. Whether specific languages will open more doors in certain industries remains open to conjecture.

The window of opportunity has been opened. It’s up to employees to find out more and carry out due diligence.
