Lady claims gender discrimination since female shavers are pricier

SEXUAL discrimination comes in many different forms, whether it be economic, religious or even cultural.

But recently, a lady drew attention for her rant on a video, claiming that it extends even into products such as shavers.

According to her, shavers for men were cheaper compared to the ones made for women.

She went on to highlight something called the pink tax which are extra charges placed on products and services directed towards women.

However, netizens who watched the video were divided over the topic. Take for example, @real_remorse said the lady ignored some of the pink shavers out there which were priced around RM6 too. However, the lady was holding the expensive one which had aloe vera scent.

Netizen @SirHishamMahir said it was not discrimination but taking opportunity on people.

“Brands know that women won’t mind spending more on their appearance. It is easy. Just boycott the pink ones and buy the guy products. When they see the pink ones losing popularity, they will drop the price,” he said.

@azliazimi also echoed his statement, saying that if the male products are cheaper, then buy the male ones.

However, @SilencerMuto said the male shavers are coarse compared to the female shavers which usually come with gel. Perhaps there are subtle differences between the shavers that justifies the price?

Also, @BJuhanis was sceptical about the video since he was able to find cheap razors online for male and females which were less than RM8. Maybe the lady should do some research before committing to her rant.

But there is always the devil’s advocate in the form of @stargazedkhai who added salt to the wound by saying that female products are usually expensive since guys are the ones who paid for them.

Another netizen claimed it was visual marketing, where patterns and colours are used to attract the attention of the female consumer. As for the guys, he claimed men seek functionality, that they had no time to choose the colours or patterns.

“As a lady who buys shaver for my dad, the high quality male shavers are expensive,” said @LYSinaga, adding that even the high quality female shavers are cheaper than the male. —May 18, 2025
