“Set aside politics, unite for the nation,” says Zahid ahead of Merdeka

DEPUTY Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on Malaysians to put aside political, religious, racial, and cultural differences in the spirit of unity, as the nation marks its 68th Independence Day.

He said that, for the sake of Malaysia, there are many ways for citizens to express and embody the true meaning of both Merdeka and Malaysia Day.

“For Malaysians, there are many ways we can manifest Malaysia Day, our Independence Day. Tomorrow marks 68 years since we celebrated Independence.

“For this Merdeka, let us set aside our political colours and beliefs. For the sake of the nation, let us unite our nature and mindset. Let us set aside religious, racial, and cultural differences.

“This is our country. Where the earth is stepped on, there the sky must be upheld,” he told reporters during the Kembara Merdeka Akar Umbi (Grassroots Merdeka Tour) programme, which he attended at two locations, Jempol and Jelebu, today.

Zahid also said all parties, especially the younger generation, must be given space to express their patriotic spirit in their own way.

He said this includes taking part in motorcycle convoys to celebrate the occasion, which also helps to strengthen unity among the community.

“Where the earth is stepped on, there the sky is upheld. For the youth, we must understand their tastes, as they are the supporters of the generation we are building for the future. Their preferences are also different from those of the older generation.

“So, we must understand their needs. If they ride ‘kapcai’ (small motorcycles) to show support for National Day, then we should ‘kapcai’ ourselves to join them.” — Aug 30, 2025
