As woman dentist kicks up a fuss over open beer display, thankfully Hindus don’t insist on a McD beef ban

SEE no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.

That would appear to be the mindset of one overly pious Muslim citizen whose complaint about beer displays in a hypermarket (Lotus’s) has made her a viral sensation.

In a Threads post that garnered 200,000 views, user @mssakinah_ posted photos of beer displays at a hypermarket in Rawang, Selangor.

While she is aware that the Chinese New Year (CNY) festival is fast approaching (Feb 17-18), she lamented that liquor sales are found in open space as opposed to the non-halal section as should be the case.

“And there’s only a small sign that says strictly for non-Muslims. My question is are the sensitivities of Muslim community not taken into consideration with the prominent display of alcoholic drinks for sale,” she grumbled while getting on her high horse.

“If we (Muslims) are used to being insensitive, maybe such drink will soon be placed on the cashier counter even though this is a public supermarket.”

Suffice to say, her holier-than-thou attitude has gotten her 15 minutes of fame as netizens, including Muslims, have roundly poured scorn on her entitled world view.

“Is your iman (faith) that fragile? I’ Muslim too, I don’t drink and it doesn’t bother me …just walk away and don’t touch la. Unless it’s pork than it’s a different story,” mocked one woman commenter.

“Malaysia is technically a secular country, just that official religion is Islam. Be tolerant, not everything has to be what you believe. Islam is simple and not complicated.”

This is when some presumably Hindus joined the fray to compare the ‘open’ selling of beef whether at supermarkets or the wet market.

One commenter chided the poster as “to how a dentist can be so stupid”.

Another was rather flabbergasted at how Muslims interpret what is halal and haram (prohibited).

On other social media platforms, Alawiyah Yussof (@AlawiyajYussof) asked the very pertinent question – “not boring, meh?”.

Highlighting that this tired complaint is wheeled out every CNY despite the displays clearly stating the contents are “non-halal” and “strictly for non-Muslims only’, the e-hailing driver asked on X if the offended shopper “is asinine or just plain stupid”.

More than a few sneered at the lady’s self-righteousness. After all, nobody was forcing her to purchase the amber nectar anyway, pointed out one disgusted commenter. It was also underlined that big beer displays during run-up to the lunar new year “have been there for centuries”.

What is imperative is that fellow Muslims have also rebutted the good dentist for her narrow mindedness as evident on the The Rakyat Post Facebook page.

But perhaps the best comment is one that wondered if “anyone ever asked McDonald’s not to sell Big Mac” given many Indians and Chinese don’t eat beef due to their faith.

To paraphrase that is like Indians patronising Malay eateries even though beef is served there “but we never ever write any complaints like this except we eat what we want, pay and go”. – Jan 27, 2026
