Indian biz owner faces boycott from Jerantut folks, 3R inquest for “biting the hand that feeds him”

“TO poke a hornet’s nest” is an idiom that draws a direct comparison to disturbing a literal nest of hornets in nature.

When a nest is threatened or physically struck, the hornets fiercely swarm out, stinging anything in their path. Figuratively, it refers to meddling in a highly sensitive or contentious issue that will lead to unforeseen, adverse backlash.

Unaware of ‘unforeseen’ but ‘adverse’ reaction is definitely on the cards whenever someone makes a provocative, controversial or just plain insulting statements on 3R (race, religion and royalty) issues.

This is most the definitely the case with an Indian entrepreneur who has several businesses in the sleepy hollow town of Jerantut, Pahang. These include a sundry shop, two mini marts and a carwash that rely on the majority Malay-Muslim population for much of their business.

So what possessed the entrepreneur to bite the hands that feeds when he allegedly posted statements that denigrated Muslims and Islam on his social media platforms?

This act of (alleged) self-sabotage was highlighted by social activist Cikgu Johari Izzat who urged the Malay-Muslim community in a series of Facebook posts to boycott businesses associated with this Indian businessman.

Editor’s Note: The alleged offending statements have since been deleted. Nevertheless, the cops have launched an investigation into “a Facebook account owner over comments deemed to contain racial provocation and insults against Islam”.

Acting district police chief DSP Arshad Ayob said a report was lodged at 11am yesterday (May 25) against the account owner with the intention of jeopardising peace or inciting public anger.

Investigations are underway under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace which carries imprisonment of up to two years or a fine or both.

Needless to say, the reaction and rebuke have been loud and swift with many Muslim commenters demanding that this ingratiate be taught a lesson.

The disgust of Malay-Muslim netizens who demanded counter-action was evident in the various FB posts, a reflection that 3R news spreads swiftly.

In JERANTUT VIRAL’s feed, an angry citizen berated at how the Indian entrepreneur whose businesses have been relying on Malay Muslim support could see it fit to aim insulting remarks at that demographic.

The sentiments on this page were equally shrill with incessant calls for Jerantut folks to boycott the businesses until they are forced to shut down.

Similar calls for boycott were to be found on the Halal inquiry Company direktori [sic] FB page that has generated 5.6K likes, 595 comments and 755 shares at time of writing, denoting that such news can go viral super-fast. The anti-Indian sentiment was very much on display here.

There are a few things to note from this latest 3R episode. Firstly, race relations in the country are probably at an all-time low with various communities at loggerheads with each other over perceived slights, insults or biadap (rudeness).

This is not helped by various political parties fanning the flames, hence further aggravating matters. The scenario is one of never-ending finger-pointing and counter accusations.

Secondly, insults hurled at another’s religion is neither smart nor productive. This can never be construed as “constructive criticism” when all it does is anger the faithful with deeply offensive remarks.

In such an over-heated environment, it should be pretty obvious to most citizens that shooting off one’s mouth is neither clever not recommended.

It will lead to a very public backlash followed by police reports lodged against the individual. In this instance, there is the added jeopardy of loss of livelihood as the local populace is mobilised to boycott the businesses.

The most pertinent advice that a person can heed at the moment is to NOT react, especially on social media. Regardless of the racist invective involved, responding in kind does nothing but aggravate the matter.

In the meantime, the hope is that cooler heads will prevail and Malaysians avoid being trapped in a loop of 3R provocations.

Whether real or imagined, nobody benefits from this drama. Calls for boycotts are understandable but the accompanying racist invective is feeding into a worrying narrative that is threatening to tear the fabric of this nation apart. – May 26, 2026
