Civil society groups urge PM to revoke Azam Baki’s NFCC appointment

THE Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) has urged Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to revoke the appointment of former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki to the National Financial Crime Centre (NFCC) Advisory Board.

“Anwar has long made anti-corruption, reform, and good governance the core of his political commitment.

“If he allows the former MACC chief commissioner, who is still the subject of serious public controversy, to enter the NFCC Advisory Board, it will severely undermine the credibility of the government’s reform agenda,” said the group’s chairperson Koong Hui Yein.

Koong warned that the appointment severely undermines the credibility of the government’s reform and anti-corruption agenda.

Under the NFCC Act 2019, such appointments are made or revoked by the King on the prime minister’s advice.

Koong stressed that Anwar must explain how Azam meets legal requirements regarding integrity and conflict of interest, given past controversies during his tenure. These include alleged share-ownership breaches, abuse of power, and suspected MACC collusion with a “corporate mafia”.

“Anwar must explain how this appointment meets the legal requirements regarding integrity, standing, and conflict of interest,” Koong said in an article published by Malaysiakini.

Alongside revoking the appointment, the group demanded a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate the allegations and ensure independent accountability within the nation’s top anti-graft leadership.

“The government must explain what makes Azam so indispensable that Anwar’s administration is willing to retain him in the nation’s anti-corruption and financial crime prevention system, even when major public concerns regarding integrity have yet to be clarified, a royal commission of inquiry has not been established, and independent accountability remains unresolved,” she added. — July 4, 2026
