THE 24 hours dobi is a place for convenience, allowing customers to wash their laundry at any time. But sadly, that bright open space at times, is also a place for sad stories and sorrow.
The homeless are equally drawn to these public spaces since it is usually well maintained and equipped with CCTV surveillance.
With some homeless people, they carry with them more than just a tale of poverty, but of ungrateful children.
Take it from this recent video which has been circulating across the internet, where an old auntie could be seen, living for months at a dobi in Taman Melewar.
Unsurprisingly, netizens were quick to condemn her children for abandoning her in such a manner.

“Two reasons. First, she was too caring of the children until the children turned into kings. Second, the children are the type that easily forget themselves,” lamented netizen @AdiAbd86807.
Another netizen claims the majority of such cases happen because the child drives the parents out.
A big hearted @ZilaZickry even called for netizens to call the Ministry Of Health to take the auntie in, worrying that she might have Alzheimer.
The winning comment probably went to netizen @35Klil who said, “Just like that, her children check into hell.”

But is the story so simple? @ZodevT wondered that perhaps the lady did not have any children.
Then there was @Swize18 claiming that he knew the auntie personally. According to him, she had many children nearby who worked good jobs and had good salaries.
However, the auntie likes to take advantage of others by asking for a lot of money.
Whether the auntie’s predicament is the result of family neglect, personal circumstances or something more complex, the truth may not be as straightforward as it first appears.
Viral videos often capture only a single moment in a much larger story. While compassion for those in need is always commendable, it is equally important to avoid rushing to judgment without knowing the full facts.
If anything, the incident is a sobering reminder that Malaysia’s ageing population requires stronger family support, community outreach and social safety nets to ensure that no elderly person is left to spend their nights in a place meant only for doing laundry.—July 26, 2026
