HILLTOP resort Genting Highlands comes to mind when one wishes to enjoy a cool climate, catch a show or risk a game of chance at the casino.
But better don’t let the ride to the popular resort be a game of chance itself, advises automotive influencer Gu Lee on his social media page.
Pointing to the high number of accidents involving buses plying the Genting Highlands route, the bespectacled motoring expert was of the opinion that it would be preferable if tourists drove themselves rather than rely on public transport.
“In the past, the bus drivers were experienced who knew the ins and outs of the route which was very difficult as it was very winding as it was going uphill,” explained the former foreman.
However, many of these drivers have since retired leaving a new breed of drivers who are inexperienced and lacking the required know how.
“Some of these drivers have yet to handle a bus steering 10 times and yet, they want to do the Genting route,” sighed the concerned ex-mechanic.
“Why’re they so eager? It’s because the wages and commissions for the Genting Highlands route is much higher. Hence everyone wants to do it as they can earn more.”
Lives at stake
Likening the roads leading up the hillside resort as “snake-like”, Gu Lee was at pains to stress that inexperienced drivers were tempting fate as buses were difficult to manoeuvre by virtue of their length and weight.
“In the past, the experienced drivers would inspect their brakes when descending. If need be, they will stop at appropriate rest area and wait till brakes cool down,” he exclaimed
“But younger drivers these days will do no such thing as they’re rushing to make.as many trips as possible to earn commissions.”
Given that any mishap can be fatal, best is not to leave it to chance and drive oneself to Genting was the sound advice here.
This public safety announcement on Facebook Reel has generated 1.6K likes, 166 comments and 244 shares at time of writing with plenty of drivers agreeing with the observation.
More than one driver noted that the roads going up and down Genting Highlands are challenging to say the least.
Interestingly, many former and current drivers of heavy vehicles seconded Gu Lee’s opinion.
Another frequent Genting visitor argued that bus drivers these days were prone to misjudging the vehicle’s handling capabilities by commandeering the buses like smaller and lighter cars.
Quite clearly frightened by the antics of these bus drivers especially in wet conditions, he proclaimed that he would usually take the bus halfway and complete the journey to the peak on cable car.
The issue of brake fade was also highlighted by a few motorists, suggesting that these bus drivers were perhaps too incompetent to notice.
Speaking from first-hand experience of being on a bus that encountered brake fade going downhill, one frightened tourist noted the ride downwards was far scarier than the journey uphill.
“One wrong move from an inexperienced driver could lead to vehicles in the ravine,” he observed warily.
Concurring with Gu Lee, many motorists thanked him for his timely reminder.
