A MALAYSIAN-DEVELOPED AI-powered instant review system for disputed badminton line calls has made its international debut at the Singapore International Challenge 2026, marking a milestone for the country’s growing sports technology sector.
Known as Reveal Lens, the Badminton World Federation (BWF)-approved technology developed by Revealtek Sdn Bhd was used during the tournament from Aug 18 to 23, its first deployment outside Malaysia after being introduced at several domestic competitions.
Co-founder and chief executive officer Nizam Mohamed said the technology demonstrates the potential of homegrown artificial intelligence solutions to improve badminton officiating and match reviews.
“It is more like the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) available in football and tennis. It is very similar, but it goes further by giving a decision based on calculations rather than simply showing a video replay,” he told Bernama.
Unlike conventional review systems that require extensive infrastructure and lengthy calibration, Reveal Lens uses a wireless setup that can be installed within two hours, making it more practical for tournament organisers.
Following its international debut, Revealtek is looking to expand into other badminton markets, with organisers and associations in Vietnam and Indonesia already expressing interest after seeing the system used in Malaysia.
The company is also in discussions with continental badminton confederations to have Reveal Lens recognised as a standard technology that could be adopted by member associations.
“We are trying to make this a standard that they can endorse, so all member associations can use this technology as standard practice,” Nizam said.
Beyond instant reviews, Revealtek is developing an analytics module and a fully automated line-calling system that could eventually perform many of the functions currently carried out by line judges.
The company plans to demonstrate the next phase of the technology at a tournament in Australia in October.
