Letter to Editor
WHEN you are in the public spotlight, the glare can be intense, wilting even. Just ask Hannah Yeoh who in the past 48 hours would have experienced a different level of scrutiny from those normally associated to her role as a cabinet minister.
The “news” that has seemingly engrossed Malaysians is that the Segambut MP has called it quits with her spouse of 18 years, Ramachandran Muniandy.

This sad end to their union was confirmed on the Federal Territories Minister’s social media accounts and numerous other mainstream media while netizens quickly spread the word.
First thing that comes to mind is that this is a private matter and the family should be left to deal with in private. There were a number of fair-minded citizens who felt that this split was none of our business as gauged from netizen’s reaction on the Malay Mail Facebook page.

But when you are in the public eye, normal rules don’t apply. It was quite reasonably pointed out that the former women, family and community development deputy minister needed to make her marital status public to avoid the rumour mill going into overdrive.

‘Too much personal life out in the open’
Interestingly, some netizens, too, took Malay language Buletin TV3 to task for being busy body over its click-bait headline “Hannah Yeoh Bercerai Selepas 18 Tahun Kahwin” (“Hannah Yeoh Divorces After 18 Years of Marriage”) when the 47-year-old DAP deputy secretary-general deserves to be accorded ample breathing space.

In all fairness, however, Yeoh has had made no secret of her faith and that the church has been a constant source of her strength and inspiration. That much she has enunciated in her published memoirs – Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey. It is a matter of public knowledge.
Hence, it should come as no shock that Yeoh’s divorce from her spouse of nearly two decades has come “as quite a shock” to some.
Still, one social media commenter confessed to being “really shocked” by the news as she felt that it was “divinely orchestrated and God-ordained marriage”.
Having made personal details public domain through her book, it was surmised that public has the right to know or at least ask ‘what happened?’.

Spiritually, the DAP Wanita committee member has also made no secret of her faith by describing herself as a Christian with her self-proclamation of “I also serve as a representative of God.”
Hence, it again came quite a shock to some that Yeoh has opted out of her nuptials with one Threader noting divorce was a “grave sin akin to abortion”.
Admitting that “evangelical toxicity is hard to purge”, this poster’s confession makes it clear how some netizens will view Yeoh terminating her matrimonial contract.

When one makes such pious pronouncements in the sphere of politics, do expect it come back to haunt you.
The question that many are asking is whether “is this fair?” At the end of the day, a divorce is a private matter and not meant for public consumption.

However, the fact that Yeoh has openly shared details of her personal life as well as her faith, it does mean that the public has at the very least merited the right to discuss or debate the matter.
But let’s draw the line at personal insults and the obvious schadenfreude at Yeoh’s expense. That’s unbecoming and reflects poorly on us – not the newly single again – mother of two daughters. – Sept 3, 2026
