Covid-19: Most recoveries, zero transmission among Malaysians

By Xavier Kong

HEALTH director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah announced that June 9 saw the highest recorded number of intra-day recoveries recorded, with 281 patients being discharged following their recovery from Covid-19.

This was matched by the news that there were only seven new cases reported today, six imported, and the sole local transmission case is a foreign worker who was found when being screened before reporting for work.

The imported cases are made up of two returning Malaysians from Singapore, two from Saudi Arabia, one from Indonesia, and one from Italy.

This brings the total number of patients discharged to 6,975, with total confirmed cases numbering 8,336. Active transmission cases are at 1,244, with six patients being in intensive care units, of whom one requires ventilator support. No deaths were reported today, keeping the death toll at 117.

Dr Noor Hisham congratulated Malaysians for their cooperation in fighting Covid-19 but urged them to keep to the standard operating procedures (SOP) and guidelines to stave off the rise of a third wave of the virus in Malaysia.

“Moving into the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO), it will be the true test of self-discipline and social discipline within the community, and it is hoped that we can continue to break the chain of transmission of Covid-19 in Malaysia,” he said, adding that it is not impossible for Malaysia to have zero new cases.

On the topic of the strain of the virus in Malaysia, Dr Noor Hisham noted that it is possible Malaysia saw all three strains of the virus. However, this requires genomic research by the Institute for Medical Research (IMR), which can now be focused on as the demand for Covid-19 tests goes down. – June 9, 2020
